AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER!
A 2018 Most Anticipated Young Adult book from debut author Adrienne Young, Sky in the Deep is part Wonder Woman, part Vikings―and all heart.
OND ELDR. BREATHE FIRE.
Raised to be a warrior, seventeen-year-old Eelyn fights alongside her Aska clansmen in an ancient, rivalry against the Riki clan. Her life is brutal but simple: fight and survive. Until the day she sees the impossible on the battlefield―her brother, fighting with the enemy―the brother she watched die five years ago.
Faced with her brother's betrayal, she must survive the winter in the mountains with the Riki, in a village where every neighbor is an enemy, every battle scar possibly one she delivered. But when the Riki village is raided by a ruthless clan thought to be a legend, Eelyn is even more desperate to get back to her beloved family.
She is given no choice but to trust Fiske, her brother’s friend, who sees her as a threat. They must do the impossible: unite the clans to fight together, or risk being slaughtered one by one. Driven by a love for her clan and her growing love for Fiske, Eelyn must confront her own definition of loyalty and family while daring to put her faith in the people she’s spent her life hating.

Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal
Review
"A rousing saga and moving coming-of-age tale, perfect for those who appreciate the wild and the wildlings, strong female protagonists, and cinematic battles." - Kirkus, Starred Review
"Drawing on Viking history and lore, debut author Young crafts an exciting, at times heart-wrenching story centered around 17-year-old Eelyn, her Aska clan, and their centuries-old war with the Riki...Young’s often poetic writing forms a stark juxtaposition with her vivid descriptions of battle and bloodshed, creating a clear picture of the brutality of war." - Publishers Weekly
"Young’s brutal, emotional debut is set in a land that is as unforgiving as its people. The strongest aspect of Young’s work is the world building; she packs it with details that viscerally pull the reader into Eelyn’s world. Young has also populated this world with complicated characters who evolve as readers get to know them. Even better, the theme at the core of the story―overcoming prejudice and unifying to fight a greater threat―resonates with current real-world issues. With its gorgeous prose and epic battle scenes, fantasy lovers will be easily satisfied." - Booklist
"Viking history aficionados as well as fans of Sarah J. Maas’ Throne of Glass series will fall in love with this richly crafted world. In particular, readers will respond to Eelyn, who is as emotionally passionate as she is physically capable. Young has built a detailed culture into Sky in the Deep in which her characters thrive. This intensely authentic story will appeal to adult readers as well as teens." - RT Reviews, 4 ½ stars Top Pick
"Eelyn is a relentlessly fierce warrior, and even her romance with a Riki fighter doesn’t quite soften her; indeed, the two find that their lust for blood is almost as strong as their lust for each other... The action on the battlefield and the rising political tensions between the clans will easily keep readers involved through the final page." - The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books
"A refreshing tale where life is tested and people have to overcome their differences to fight a bigger foe to survive. A fast-paced, action-filled fantasy for all YA collections." -School Library Journal

The synopsis piqued my interest from the very beginning because I’m a sucker for all things Wonder Woman and a fan of the Vikings series. I’m always down for good a “betrayal” story and I couldn’t wait to find out why everyone enjoyed this book so much.
Actioned-packed and bloody right from the very beginning, I was sucked in from the very first page. The novel starts off with Eelyn, our mc, preparing to go to war with the rival tribe the Riki. in the midst the battle she spots none other than her brother Iri- who died in the last battle 5 years ago- fighting alongside the Riki- something that shouldn’t even be possible because she saw him fall to his death with her own two eyes.
I enjoyed Young’s writing in the first half of the book. Beautiful descriptions that made me felt as if I was there experiencing the same thing. I could sympathize with Eelyn. I actually sided with her actions and that made the novel felt even more real. I could connect with Eelyn and I commend Young for the excellent writing.
Around the midway mark in the book, I started to grow tired of the novel. I wanted more action that the synopsis had promised and it was nowhere in sight. I started to get bored until I realized the novel was more character-driven than plot-driven and I started to enjoy it again. The plot showed up when I least expected and after it appeared the book moved so fast-paced that I didn’t want it to end but knew the inevitable was close.
characters
As I mentioned before the novel is mostly character-driven. I enjoyed Eelyn’s character. She’s headstrong, steadfast and intelligent. She knows what she wants and would do anything to get it. Even though Sky in the Deep is a standalone novel, she had a great amount of character growth. I loved seeing how she came to terms with her brother’s “betrayal” (which I wholeheartedly do see as a betrayal). I loved her interactions with the supporting characters, especially little Halvard.
Fiske, the main love interest doesn’t talk much but I also enjoyed his character. When he isn’t threatening Eelyn, he’s saving her from herself and showing his familial love for Iri. He was a hard one to decipher but a good character nonetheless.
Iri, the brother of Eelyn, I didn’t like so much. Even though I understood his actions, I just couldn’t agree with them. Imagine being alive all this time when you have could have let your family know. Not only did hide the fact that you were alive, but you also went to war against your former clansmen. Eelyn’s feelings were justified.
Halvard, Fiske’s little brother (who is getting his own novel, I might add) was a bundle of sunshine. He made the hard parts of the novel easier to get through with his innocence and friendliness with Eelyn.
romance
And when he kissed me again, the seconds slowed. They stretched out and made more time. I felt his body against mine, unraveling everything else that was between us, and my soul unwound, threading itself to his. And I let it. I gave myself to him. Because I was already his.
The romance was slow-paced with everybody’s favourite “enemies to friends to lovers” trope. I’m a sucker for mean on the outside but loveable softies on the inside kind of guys. Even though the novel was a standalone, the romance did not overshadow any part of the story. the romance was swoon-worthy and I wish there was more.
ending
My only gripe was the ending. The book speaks about the antagonist as legends and I feel like if they are legends the fight against them should have been more difficult. The ending felt rushed and anti-climactic that it sucked the enjoyment I had for the romance. The ending left me wanting more and I only hope that Young visits Eelyn and Fiske’s story again.
Overall, I enjoyed the novel and can’t wait to visit this world again.
Let's just be honest here: The book gets all the stars. I seriously don't know how I'm going to be able to function later this year as I'm already freaking out about the gloriously amazing books I've read in ONE MONTH. How does this happen? I feel like I've already read my Top Pick for the year.
Anyway on to Eelyn because she needs an award.
Adrienne Young, the author of this book, needs an enormous amount of cookies and prizes for this book. She deserves it. For a semi-fantasy world (basically just a Viking story that isn't called "Viking."), this book felt so accurate to how Vikings behave. The slaughter, the bizarre "My god hates your god, so I'ma kill you" mentality of feuds, and the treatment of each other. Eelyn is badass, there is no mistaking that, but she's not the odd one in this story. Vikings were super odd in their time because they allowed women to fight (which has, for whatever reason, been a huge no-no), so Eelyn fighting and being good at it is no surprise to this culture. I loved watching her character grow from being so hardheaded and "YOU ARE MY ENEMY" to actually sitting back and thinking "Why?" Because literally no one else does, and all of these people keep fighting and dying for literally no reason, and the vikings were SO good at that. (I love my heritage, don't get me wrong. Vikings did have stupid moments, though.)
The plot twists in this book. Oh, the plot twists. You get thrown into the mess VERY early on, with so much changing constantly because spoilers. I'm actually really shocked with how they did the synopsis of this book because they managed to tell you what happened with no spoilers, and it doesn't even really give you an idea of what might happen to shock you, so I liked that. Going into this, I had a rough idea that Eelyn and her brother would meet up and he was killing her kin or something, and then she had to go on some epic journey with that dude named Fiske and....that's all I've got. This book was SO much more than that.
Fiske grew on my so much. I hated him. H A T E D him. I wanted him dead, and then I didn't and I looked back and scratched my head because I was so confused why that change had happened. Iri, her brother, meh? I'm still not a huge fan of him, but I get why/what he did, so I won't say anything else. Inge was amazing and even though I have a great mom, can I have Inge too? And Fiske's little brother whose name just fled from my mind was the sweetest squishy. I know he's supposed to be a viking, but he's a Hufflepuff all the way and needs to be protected at all costs.
The family dynamics in this book made me jump around in joy. YA is notorious for there being dead/broken families, and no one rectifies or forgives, and the whole thing is kinda unbelievable because you have to forgive to heal and just yeah. Sky in the Deep showed families who loved one another completely, without fault. It was exactly what a family should be and we need more rep for great families because it's good for people to see that not every family is awful or broken or gone. Inge, Fiske, Iri, and the lil Hufflepuff are goals. Even Eelyn and her dad and Iri are so beautiful to see because despite what's going on or what happened in the past, they love one another unconditionally, and would readily die for the other or kill to protect them. Even Myra, who Eelyn's dad adopts as a second daughter, has that same connection with Eelyn and her dad. This has always been something about Vikings that has made me happy because even if you're some distant relative, they welcomed one another with open arms. No one does this anymore (at least here in America that I've seen).
The world in this was so spot on, I just can't even. I'm in love with the TV show Vikings, and as I'm reading Sky in the Deep, I feel like I'm watching a lil Lagertha climb her way up to adulthood. The world is filled with sweeping mountains covered in snow and trees, and fjords with fish and rushing, freezing water. I can see it all so well because it sounds like Scandinavia and those regions of the world.
I also really loved the fact that this is a stand-alone, or maybe it'll have a sequel later on, but this works so well as a single novel that I love it. Almost no fantasy/action books are novels nowadays. All are series, and almost all are trilogies, so you have a story dragged out over multiple books when sometimes they only need one big book or two medium-ish books to complete the series.
Anyway, everyone must read this because it is perfect.

I must say, I’m really enjoying the vicious bite women characters are taking on these days. I’ve long been a fan of female driven books, of course, but it seems like lately, our women are taking things one step further and showing a gritty ruthlessness that has never been this apparent before. Eelyn is the perfect example of that; a warrior, raised on the notion of honour over life, she is tough as nails, fighting alongside the men, and often speaking about crushing someone’s skull in.
The other female characters are also fierce, and I enjoyed the dynamic that was built between them all. In fact, all the characters were great. There was a broad range of characters who all played their parts, but I really enjoyed that the bottom line of this story was the bond and loss between a brother and a sister. It wasn’t a love story at it’s core, though they each have their own tangents that involve that, but what drives the book is family and loyalty and that sibling bond, be it by blood or soul. I really enjoyed this.
The book is somewhat gritty at times, too. The fighting scenes aren’t sugar coated, there is carnage and blood and vivid descriptions of the scene as it unfolds. it’s not overly gratuitous, but it’s realistic and I loved that Young didn’t hold back.
Eelyn throws herself totally into battle, making her one of the strongest, rawest characters I’ve seen in a long time. Sure, she ends up finding love, but she doesn’t spend her moments in battle worrying or longing for her beloved, she does her duty, she does her job, and then she worries about everything else. You don’t see that too often, love often tends to blur the lines and get in the way of those kinds of loyalties, so I love that Young went in this direction.
Frankly, I loved everything about this story. The structure of it is expected and it doesn’t take any unexpected turns, but the bonds are strong and the characters are well groomed. It moves along at a really quick pace, there’s no long drawn out journey in between, the important points are met and the journey is touched upon, but nothing is overly drawn out so the momentum never loses its pace. I really enjoyed each page, each chapter, and I’d give anything for a little more.
I don’t know if there’s an intended sequel, it doesn’t really feel like there is much more to go on after this and while I love the characters, I wouldn’t want to see it drawn out into something more just because. But I’ll tell you this, whatever Young puts out next, I’m going to be first in line to read it. What a brutally beautiful debut. More please.
