Anexcellent book in a relatively new genre. The story was interesting and offereda fresh perspective on a traditional plot. I very much enjoyed reading thisover my holiday break. I hope to see more from this author in the years tocome!  -- Michael Manning --

*Starred Review*  From
TerrySchott, Author of The Game is Life series

I've always loved stories like this where the main character loves to play agame and finds themselves transported into it. Aleron did a great job ofbuilding the world, explaining the rules, and then taking the reader straightinto a fun and exciting adventure. After reading, 'The Land: Founding', youwill either want to call up your friends and re-subscribe to your MMORPG, orrush to create an account and begin playing for the first time! Of course, while you're waiting for it to load up, you will have already downloaded booktwo of this series and started it! Awesome stuff!  -- Terry Schott --

Wow. What a ride.I see why the call you the father of the LitRPG. It feels like I just got done playing this epic RPG, the base game at least. lol With all the other books, Im starting to see them as game expansions, continuing the journey of Richter, Sion, the Mist Village and the growing crew of friends and companions he'll amass along the way. And to think the journey has only begun. This may not be the example of the perfect book in regards to grammar, dialogue, concept and story structure, it shows how meaningless those barriers are. This entire genre shows how unconventional concepts can make for simply great and wondrous stories, as it should be. And I am so happy for Mr. Kong that he was able to write about something he genuinely loves and make such a wonderful series out of it. This has personally helped affirm and teach me many things about what it means to be an author, and to work on honing the craft to where you can write about literally anything, as long as you truly have heart in it, and really let the story breath and live for itself. It shows the fantastical stories we can make and the journeys we can take readers along for.Proud to be part of your Mist Village! Looking forward to getting the next one!

In this review I will be reviewing this book as well as touching on the rest of the series (no spoilers)

The Land: Founding is incredible addicting as it follows Richter being thrown into a MMORPG made real life. It starts out with him meeting a being that instantly reminds him that he is an average Joe and that it is no longer a game. While Richter does have some amazing abilities that set him above the rest, he seems to hold back information about what he can do so that he does not instantly triumph over what ever comes his way. Everything to how Richter acts and responds to situations make it feel like he is a human and not a character in the book. An overall presence in the book is humor, with all the stuff happening around Richter make for a sort of hectic state of reading, but Aleron always introduces humor in some way that makes everything feel better.

The way Aleron writes his characters make it so that we are able to find bits of our selves in each character, making the story come alive and incredible engaging. The way he address even small problems are what make The Land even better. One of Richter's abilities allows him to understand any language instantly which is a common problem that I see that is never addressed; going one step above in this example is that he leave some words and most colloquialisms messed up or untranslatable. Every decision made by Richter really brings us into his mind, with him behaving how any of us would behave, questioning his actions and if what he is doing is right.

Some negatives that mainly come form the series as a whole are not major in any way and should not deter you from reading this series. At the beginning of each book, there is a bit of text smaller that a chapter that brings us into the eyes of outside characters. This blurb has of the 6th book not led to anything directly affecting Richter. The most common problem I notice is that some of Alerons word choices are way above what most people would understand, even though the word fits perfectly into the sentence it just confuses me and ruins the sentence (I consider my self to have a decent vocabulary). Another thing is unfinished ideas. There are a few of these just lingering around. By this I mean that there are a few ideas that Aleron introduced that could have really been expanded on and added to the story, but you end up having to wait a few books to see the idea finished or expanded on. For somethings they just have never come as of yet.

TL;DR Great series, incredible immersive and you can find yourself in each character introduced. Most negatives are minor and easily resolved or just not important. NOW GO BUY THIS BOOK AND THE REST OF THE SERIES.

This first entry in The Land series really feels like a first entry. Like the Dresden Files's Storm Front, this book doesn't fully do the series justice and leaves a very meh feeling overall. Except for the introduction of LitRPG to the USA which, at the time, was novel enough of a concept for pretty much all flaws to be forgiven, especially ones that aren't terribly severe.

The characterization and dialogue is painful sometimes. Nothing is made note of relating to Richter's stratospheric rise in personal power (went from lvl 1 to 10 I think in a few weeks whereas natives can take decades) or his strange language. The book is riddled with coincidence which is only kinda sorta reconned in Monsters, the most recent entry at the time of review.

Most of the characters meld together and are just different names on pretty much the same featureless lump of literary clay. They are good guys, pretty girls, or fiery short wizened old women. This describes every main character. And the villains are super bad and all men.

The only real characterization actually belong to Sion who goes from staging Richter's death for reasons left weirdly unknown despite it leading to the staggering revelation that Richter can respawn and being a big deal to Richter. But, Sion goes from that to basically a brother to Richter in a few weeks because he was gifted with magic. This would have been a good time for Richter to wonder about the mind control properties of The Land and the nature of free will in this system if your relationship with others is controlled by numbers that can be forcibly altered.

There is a lot of room for exploration, for questions, for comparisons to Earth life that just aren't made and take away from the story since it's less a real person dealing with what is in essence an immigrant story mixed with fantasy power gaming slice of life. For a good example of how to handle this, look to the Mayor of Noobtown which is much better written overall but also smaller in scale by focusing on a more personal story.

That being said, the series is epic and is good enough for me to have reread all of the books several times. Don't let the weakness of this first book stop you from missing out one of the most influential book series in American Isekai and LitRPG. The subsequent books are much better written and everything is planned out better and relies less on "you seem trustworthy" Deus ex machina.

First of all, I don’t like medieval fantasy that much, actually I always find it boring, but, damn, not this one. Idk why I started reading, how I got here, I just know that this book is amazing and I am really happy to have found it! It is the best LitRPG I have read so far.

For you who is maybe doubting if you going to read, just know there is plot, there is good characters, there is growth, it is not boring, the story is well developed, the things have a nice rhythm, nothing happens out of nowhere. I have nothing bad to say about the book. The writing is so good, and organic that I could spend hours reading without getting bored or irritated. And for me who has english as a second language, it was so understandable and, idk, complete.

Kong did a amazing work in this first book. He is such a good writer that I am kinda disappointed I haven’t found this before.

If you, reader, are not a fan of medieval fantasy like me, but is still thinking about reading, just go for it. And if you like medieval fantasy, go for it too. And if you don’t like LitRPG, go for it because this book will make you like it!

The setting of the story is good and the MC is also nice but a bit one dimensional. The story lacks intrigue and depth maybe the following books will add more to the characters and the plot.

Me gusta la velocidad y naturalidad con la que se mueve la historia y de momento no te aburre con el protagonista queriendo volver a casa cada dos por tres. Me leeré el siguiente.
